2020 - a year to forget?
Thursday 31st December, 2020
The pandemic has devastated many in the industry – both from the disease directly and from the wider impact of all the shutdowns and restrictions throughout out entertainment community.
Yes, if it helps save lives then we all knew the entertainment industry would accept the shutdowns and restrictions in pursuit of the wider good. The price has been high for all in lost lives, lost jobs and lost livelihoods – and this blow may have pushed back big parts of our beloved industry by decades from its 2019 high point.
Our industry will pick itself up, it will carry on innovating and reinventing ways of bringing people together for the pure joy of association and entertainment.
So whilst it’s been the most challenging crisis I have ever seen in my 35 years in the industry - I’d also like to say that I do believe that in the coming years we will look back on 2020 as a year when governments, sponsors and the wider public realised without doubt, what we have always known; that free association of people in a place of entertainment is vitally import to all of us – for enjoyment , for our own mental health and because we are all social beings - we learn to appreciate it more by not having it.
Looking forwards, and with the first vaccines arriving; in time our industry will pick itself up, it will carry on innovating and reinventing ways of bringing people together for the pure joy of association and entertainment. What could be a better forward vision than that?
And that’s why we shouldn’t forget about 2020 and what we learned, even if we feel tempted to do so…
Sincere end of year greetings to you all,
