USB HUB & Ethernet Booster for FLX ?

van den abbeele Eric

Recommended Posts

Hello

Question 1

About USB Hub that I want to add for use with my FLX, Two wings, one 22 inch screen Monitor and I want to add 1 mouse & 1 Keyboard...

Have you a recommended brand ? Most of USB Hub are working now in USB 3.0 ? Is it a problem ?

Question 2

I think in few week about using Ethernet Link and using a Node on stage...

So I know that the Ethernet Cable have limited distance... Less than 100 meter, (DMX is Less than 400 m...)

Have you some information about Ethernet signal Booster ?

What do you do with long section ?

For instance for DMX, I use Splitter/booster and the signal look to be OK....

But having other solution can be good...

Thank a lot

Eric

Eric - I have no direct experience with USB on FLX but if you follow the same practice as for a PC... Buy a reasonably priced USB Hub with an external power supply - USB 3.0 will work with most versions of USB but the external power is the important part.

As for ethernet extending - it's going to get complex I'm afraid...  You will need to find some transceivers to convert the copper ethernet to fibre optic and some fibre cable to link them (plus the appropriate terminations). Something like the TP-Link MC200CM ?

It MIGHT be possible to use WiFi if you have "line of sight" - there are several companies that supply specially designed antennae to keep the signal as a "tight beam" but not cheap.

If the ethernet is going to be used indoors and you have secure accessible storage - it might be feasible to create a daisy chain of ethernet switches - don't use managed hubs but "dumb" switches to reduce the possibility of lag.

Hi Eric,

I think @iank99 has covered everything here. To add a couple of further comments:

There are many different approaches to running network cabling above 100m, most of which come down to personal preference and the specific requirements of each system.

If you need a cable run of more than 200m, I would be tempted to go with Ian's suggestion, and move over to fibre for the cable run...

As Ian suggests, if you need a cable run between 100m and 200m, you could get away with putting a small Ethernet switch mid way along the line. Depending on the system you are creating, it could be useful to add a wireless access point at this location too. I would not recommend "daisy-chaining" multiple switches to achieve this, as the more "hops" you add, the more latency there will eventually be.

The setup Ian is talking about here is specialist equipment. Personally, I wouldn't consider Wi-Fi for this, but YMMV. If you need to get a DMX universe remotely, then sending DMX wirelessly will be less of a headache than wirelessly sending your Ethernet network a great distance.

If you have any questions, let us know.

Thank Iank99 & Edward for the Answers.

So for Ethernet Cable, I must think about this.

Using Fibre Optic, It s sure that I will no use this for instance... Price & I think that a bit more fragile than RJ45/ethernet....

Have a nice day,

Hello

I would like to know a little more about the possibility of adding a USB HUB to help FLX power, with 1 more Wing and one mouse.

Having already 2 wings + screen and the USB key backup, I tell myself that to add more things, I'm afraid that the FLX power supply  could have problems.

So I would like to relieve this one with a quality "USB Hub"...
What can you advise me ?

Thank you in advance for your help and have a nice weekend.

Eric

The full-size FLX has protection on the USB ports - if a device tries to pull more power than is allowed, power to the USB port will be cut off to protect the stability of the main console. That said, you obviously don't want your Wing or Mouse to suddenly cut out, so we'd always recommend a powered external hub.

Hello,

Thank.

Have you some specific recommanded External Hub to buy ? Something that will not give to many problems and that will have a good stability ?

Thank and have a nice day
