Load per socket

Hi

I have a couple of chilli Jr's and couple of betapack 3's.

I know both are capable for 10A per channel but my question is does this have to be split over the 2 sockets of each channel.

My situation is the sockets on the ends of the 15A cable runs from the dimmer room are not in the best position for how we use the space any more and I have a handful of 15A extention cables of a couple of meters each that I use to get round this. But I need to use more than I have for an event next week so is it feisable to use a 15A double socket on the end of 1 channel run and plug two 1000w par64's on the end. I'm not going over the 10A limit, but is it OK that its all coming off 1 of the channel sockets, not both.

Thanks

This would be absolutely fine. Providing that you are using suitably rated cabling, the cables and sockets will be rated up to 15 amps. The combined load on the pair of 15 amp sockets per channel, must not exceed 10 amps. You could therefore theoretically have 5 amps connected to both sockets simultaneously, or 10 amps connected to one of the sockets.

You could therefore plug in a pair of 1kw PAR 64s into a single socket of the dimmers by using a grelco/squelly.

Hope this helps,

I presume everything is rated to 15 amps, they cables and splitters all have 15 amp sockets and pins on them so.....

Don't presume that at all - depending on the space, those cables could be made up from almost any cable they had around from 1.0mm to 2.5mm. The plug & socket being rated at 15a is a "designator" for commonality more than anything.

It's vital that you check the size of the cable so that if it becomes a long cable run so that the circuit protection between the mains & the dimmer work reliably (it might be an earth leakage breaker or RCD), that the cable is rubber cased not PVC (PVC degrades quicker in use - running it a max load can become fun quickly if it's an old cable) & that it's the right size i.e. 1.5mm TRS such as this - Link to Stage Depot if the runs become longer than 20m then you should upgrade to 2.5mm so that all circuit protection still works.
