ZerOS 7.9.7.21 has now been superseded by ZerOS 7.9.7.24 (Public Beta Release)

Dear All,

We have released ZerOS 7.9.7.21 (Public Beta Release) for all Zero 88 lighting consoles (except FROG2) and servers running the ZerOS Operating System. This will be called "ZerOS 7.9.8" once released.

This is a pre-release build of ZerOS. It is not recommend for use on live shows.

Please remember that you run this software at your own risk. Although we always try our best to help in all situations, please be sensible when you install this software. Don't install new software on your console mid-run or when it is critical that your console is fully operational.

If you are unhappy with the Beta software, you can backdate to the current release version of ZerOS by downloading the software from this link:
zero88.com/zeros/

The installation process wipes EVERYTHING on the console (both the Linux operating system and the ZerOS application) and reinstalls from scratch, so it's absolutely fine to backdate a console's software.

If you are going to load a showfile onto Beta Software, please keep an original version of the showfile safe, encase the Beta Software saves data that can not be read on a previous Release Version of software.

When loading showfiles from previous versions of ZerOS, fixtures are highlighted in red within the Fixture Schedule. These are now “legacy” fixture personalities. The Fixture Schedule provides the ability to convert these to the new ZerOS Library format. When fixtures of a single fixture type are selected within the Fixture Schedule, the “Change Profile” column will instead say “Convert Profile”.

Showfiles saved in this version of ZerOS are saved with the file extension “.zos”. They are not backwards compatible with previous versions of ZerOS and may not be forwards compatible with the final public release of ZerOS.

Specific areas to test:

  • Anything and everything to do with fixtures!
    • Patching fixtures
    • Controlling fixtures, including...
      • Parameter descriptions
      • Parameter details
    • Programming fixtures
    • Playing back fixtures
    • Palettes, auto palettes and referencing palettes, including...
      • Colour swatches
      • Gobo previews
    • Home, default, max levels
    • Fixture Macros
    • "Beam" and "Shape" functionality, including...
      • Cue fades & delays
      • UDK fades
      • Default fades & delays
      • Fader controls...
      • Move on Dark (specifically "Don't move Beam" and "Don't move Shape")
      • Shape & Beam "Wheel Editing modes"
      • Chase attribute fade percentages

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the Zero 88 Forum.

Changing the library format is an interesting move and hasn't had much comment - what new capabilities will this bring? Will the fixture generator tool be updated soon? Looking forward to seeing the new features.

Thanks for the question. One of the biggest fundamental benefits of the new library format, is more fixtures, with more detailed information than our existing library.

This includes far more extensive parameter details, gobo libraries, and fixture macros. It also sets us up for implementing future features. Another key addition to FLX range consoles, is splitting the Beamshape attribute to Beam and Shape, and therefore allowing new fade times and options that go with it. Legacy fixture files will of course still be compatible, so for now the Fixture Editor software will remain available for you to still create your own fixtures.

If you have any questions let us know.

Hello

Fixture Library evolution
a question concerning the evolution of fixture libraries. Will all fixtures change over time? you are going to modify the elements for each brand and each type of projectors?

If indeed this new OS 7.9.8 evolves to use new fixture formats to take advantage of use Beam separately from shape, that means that to fully benefit from it, each fixture must be able to benefit from all the parameters ...?

The load for the processor and the memory are already planned to take more parameter?

RGB + White + Amber led colour picker
Other questions which concern more the shows of Theater, it is the inclusion in Led RGB projectors, the White part (when it is present in the projectors) as well as the Amber part in the color picker?
Indeed when we work on the Color picker it is a mixture of the 3 primary colors, something that does not always succeed on all projectors ... On the other hand when we mix a color with white, the pastel colors are much prettier .
Likewise, when amber is used with white, it is easier to have beautiful shades ...

thank Edward and have a good week end

ZerOS 7.9.8 will bring a completely new fixture library, from a third party company. This includes a far more extensive library of fixtures, and far more information. For example, gone is the seven character limit for parameter names!

There will be no original fixtures from the current version of ZerOS in the new library, however, you can load old fixture profiles in if you wish.

Currently, the ZerOS colour mixing will be applied to CMY, RGB, or RGBW fixtures. The new fixture library will allow us to include other colours, such as Amber, in a future update.

So currently the library has more than 12,000 fixtures ...
When we are going to work with 7.9.8, how will it be?

Will the new library consist of only new projectors map that arrive at your home and are transformed into fixtures? What about the 12,000 existing fixtures? Will it be updated as it goes? OR should this be requested from zero 88 (third party company)?

- If a RGBW projector haven't a complete colour mixing in fixture library, is it possible to update the fixture for use this possibility ?

- When RGBW + A will be allowed in ZerOS, Fixture which have RGBW+A possibility will be automatically update for using all the capacity of the colour picker, or we must ask to you to do this update ?

Thank for your answers Edward

have a nice day

PS : Monday video presentation was great ! To have possibility to see you and other guys on Zero88 presentation, is very interesting ! Good moment !

The new fixture library will be regularly updated. I don’t know the exact number of fixtures off the top of my head contained in the latest beta, but believe it is just under 20,000.

Most of the existing fixtures, will be contained in the new library. There will however be some that aren’t in the new library. This isn’t a problem for the user, as they can just load in their missing fixtures from the old Zero 88 library. Or, if they let us know, we will be able to get missing fixtures added to the new library format.

If a fixture has parameters named “Red”, “Green”, “Blue” and “White”, they will automatically be applied to colour mixing.

When Amber is supported, existing fixtures with Amber should automatically be applied to colour mixing.

Possibly a trivial point, but if 7.9.8 is not wholly backward compatible with 7.9.7, I wonder if this may cause some user confusion and concerns - it seems much more than an incremental update and I wonder why this is not moving toward ZerOS 8.0, to signify the change in show file and library format?

Is there a reason for keeping the incremental numbering?  And is there something even bigger planned for ZerOS 8...?

If you have a quick look back through the forum, you’ll see that ZerOS 8 has planned to have features such as pixel mapping included. We’re keen to stick with this, and as a user, other than Beamshape being split into BEAM and SHAPE, there aren’t any brand new features as such, just improved fixture handling and more extensive libraries. In terms of ZerOS, it is however a major update.

In terms of the ZerOS roadmap, it would be too much work to make ZerOS 7.9.8 backwards compatible. The new file extension helps identify this, and an attempt to load a .zos file into a version expecting a .isf format will show an error to indicate it is not compatible. Release notes will contain clarity on show file compatibility.

If you have any questions let us know.
