van den abbeele Eric Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 Hello, I have a question about Sunstrips style fixtures that use many DMX channels. I could understand by talking with other technicians working on other consoles which using capacity like "Sub fixtures" to Using little DMX channels, when many Sunstrips are used ... When is it FLX and ZerOS, is it something that also exists? Edward Z88 Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 Hi Eric, Currently ZerOS doesn’t have “sub-fixtures” meaning you are best to patch a fixture on the console per pixel. Edward Quote Edward Smith Product Specialist Email Support

Any "sub-fixture" support of a console is not going to change how many DMX channels are used. Number of DMX channels required is a function of which fixture features you want to be able to control from the console. Sub-fixture support is purely about how the console presents the elements of a fixture on the UI and how it can use them in e.g. effects engines. No console "saves" DMX channels by supporting the concept of "sub-fixtures". Quote
van den abbeele Eric Posted June 12, 2020 Author Report Posted June 12, 2020 Hello Thank for the answers. So I see for exemples a LYRE LED PIXEL 19x15W RGBW which can use 95 CH DMX from LedStage. If I want to have only 10 Lyre like this, it will use about 950 DMX Channels (2 universes) ... So not so much easy to use projectors like this... Edward Z88 Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 Hi Eric, Yes, when you need to use fixtures in the high channel count modes, you will very quickly eat up universes when you are using a number of fixtures. Hence why FLX is available up to 16 universes of DMX output for these large channel count situations. Edward Quote Edward Smith Product Specialist Email Support

Agreed that such beasts are likely to be easier to assimilate if the console does support a sub fixture concept. Quote
van den abbeele Eric Posted June 13, 2020 Author Report Posted June 13, 2020 To understand this better (having never used this kind of machine), can you tell me a bit about the advantage of having a console that can manage or not Sub fixtures? Because if it does indeed change nothing on the side of DMX Channels, it takes an adventure to have Sub fixtures or not ... Thank you very much for taking the time to explain this to me. take care Quote 1 FLX + 1 wing "7.14" + 1 FLX "7.13" & 4 Wings / 2 Touchscreen // Jester 24/48 2 Swisson XND-4R5 ENode // Stairville : 4 Wash MZH 19X15w - 31 Retro Flat Par 18X 12w RGBW Electroconcept : 36 Wash 18 X 10w Q188 // ADJ 2 Spot Focus 4Z & 2 Spot Focus 5Z Led 200w - VARYTEC : 12 Varytec Hero Wash 300 FC LedStage : 10 LS200 - Spot 200w // 19 Wash Par 12 X 18W // 12 BOWLDER 12X40w WASH // 12 PARZOOM 19 X 15w // 7 LY 400 - BSW CMY LED 400w
Edward Z88 Posted June 13, 2020 Report Posted June 13, 2020 Hi Eric, ”Sub-Fixtures” or “multi-part” or “multi-pixel” or”zoned fixtures”, basically means one fixture having potentially multiple intensities, multiple RGBW, or maybe multiple Pan and Tilt. The most common implementation of controlling such fixtures, is to use syntax such as 2.3. This would control part 3 of fixture 2. Currently, we don’t have this functionality on ZerOS. All this means is you have a choice of how you control multi part fixtures on FLX. Option 1, is you patch the fixture just like any normal fixture, where it just has a single fixture number on the console. However if there are multiple RGBW, these would just be under the colour attribute, and each time you tap COLOUR you would page through and access each part in turn. Doing this will not apply colour to the internal colour mixing, or effects. If there are multiple intensities, these are found under Beam. Option 2, which is the best option if you are on FLX, is to patch each part/pixel as its own fixture. Therefore if you have a 10 cell LED batten, you wouldn’t simply have a single fixture patched on the console for the whole batten, you would have 10 pixels patched. You then have a fixture per pixel, and easily control them as whole by grouping them if you wish. If you’re on a FLX S console, you will quickly run out of fixture numbers using this method so you are best to elect for the full FLX in these situations. So as Kevin mentions above, fixtures with multi-cell functionality typically use up more DMX channels, however the console can’t change that (unless you use RDM to change to a fewer channel count mode, but doing this would lose multi cell functionality). If you are running out of DMX channels on your system, you will therefore have to put your lights in smaller channel count modes. Hope this helps and makes sense, if you have any questions let us know. Edward Quote Edward Smith Product Specialist Email Support
van den abbeele Eric Posted June 13, 2020 Author Report Posted June 13, 2020 Thanks Adward for the reply. Question: ZerOS does not do this, but it will evolve. Because indeed there are more and more projectors which can work Led by Led, which implies to make matrix effects. And you can see inexpensive solutions doing that. So if I find that ZerOS is a really interesting software, there is also the evolution of the projectors and the needs of the people of the shows who evolve too. So it is certain that ZerOS is evolving and this is positive. But it would be positive not to let other consoles take too many advantages on the FLX ... Thanks in any case for your help.
