Sound to light for chases?

Hi Zero-Heroes,

I'd like to ask a question regarding-sound-to light for chasers.
I yesterday tried to use sound-to-light on an ORB XF the very first time, but it seamed to not have any impact to the speed of the chaser.
How do I have to set it up?
Should there be a different behavior by enabling or disabling "Use Global BPM", since this seems to be independent from enabling sound-to-light? (at the end BPM was the only thing impacting the chaser speed)
Is there any "input visualization" or need for adjustment for the sound level?

Thanks in advance and best regards
Sven

Hi Sven,

Sound to Light can be enabled for any chase. To do this hold SETUP and tap the chase’s button, and then enable Sound to Light. The bass input of the incoming audio signal will then trigger these chases. I would recommend sending the console a bass-filtered signal if you don’t feel the console is triggering on the correct beat. It is also worth ensuring the source as a volume control, so you can adjust the audio level to suit.

Global BPM is completely seperate to Sound to Light, and will mix LTP with Sound to Light to control the speed of a chase, so I would recommend disabling Global BPM for chases with Sound to Light to avoid confusion.

You are able to view a graphic EQ of the incoming audio signal in Test mode if you wish.

Hope this helps, any queries let me know.

Hi Edward,

that is exactly what we did: Enabling sound-to-light by holding setup and tapping the chase's button. Unfortunately without any effect 😞
Our Sound signal is EQ'ed by the sound desk to only give us bass.
What confuses me as well is that even if sound-to-light is enabled, you still need to either "use global BPM" or set a specific fixed BPM to the chase.

What do you mean with "Test mode"? Is it an option somewhere in the setup or do you mean a beta version of an upcoming release?

Thanks and best regards
Sven

By the way:

My sound colleague mentioned, that he physically switched the "L" and "R" parallel by using a coupling resistance.
(see attached circuit diagram)
He now thinks that this might cause an issue, if you are doing the same inside the desk, because this might cause a phase shift of 180° which would result in a level of 0.
Can you confirm or deny that you really use "L/R" in the desk or if you parallelize the signals as well - then we would need to remove our coupling resistance.

I hope this makes sens to you, since I only translating here. I'm no soundguy as you might know 😉

Beside this he would like to know, which level would be needed on the input to trigger the chase.

Thanks and best regards
Sven

You can access Test Mode by holding the SETUP key down when you power the console. When in Test Mode choose Other Test, where STOL (Sound to Light) status is displayed. Check this display to ensure you are receiving an audio signal.

The Jack input is wired in the standard tip being left, ring being right, sleeve being signal ground. These are then merged and the console listens to the low frequency of both channels (you could therefore essentially use 2 audio sources, with left input from one and right input from another).

Any queries let me know.

Hi again,

sorry for the late feedback:
We were able to start the console in Test-Mode and saw a perfect STL signal (almost only kicks as EQed by Sound console).
After that we again started the console as normal and retried our tests: I don't know what we did different this time, but everything is working perfect and as expected now!

So thanks for all the help and hints!

Best regards
Sven

Great, glad to hear it! Just let me know if there is anything else I can do.
