I know its probably a bit late now but my theatre has done several meoldramas including Maria Marten. The essence of a good melodrama is over the topness. The most important aspect of melodrama lighting is to use a green gel to put a green spot on the villian as he enters (probably to some dramatic piano chords). Things that may seem cheesy such as red lighting for a death scene are perfect to add to the victorian ham acting feel. In summary the best thing is to forget about being creative and artistic and just keep it cheesey and simple
