GLX
Would it be possible to install a usb port into a fatfrog in place of the floppy drive, I keep breaking the disks.
samcoombes
Please can we have a front mounted floppy drive, as absolute nightmare having to pull the whole desk out just to change the discs....
K-Nine
Practically, it is not possible to easily move the physical position of the floppy disk drive, but we are trying to gauge demand for swapping the floppy disk drive for a USB port for show storage etc. Quote K-Nine : Technically Advanced Roving Dog In Space Bran Media | Myspace
Gabzqc
hiya, by "swapping the floppy disk drive for a USB port" are you still talking about the fatfrog series? because that would be amazingly helpful, as floppys are so unreliable. cheers
K-Nine
Yes, I was referring to the frog series of desks (frog, fat frog, leap frog, mambo frog, bull frog, frog box) .... The Frog 2 already has USB ports fitted as standard Quote K-Nine : Technically Advanced Roving Dog In Space Bran Media | Myspace
Gabzqc
wow, that really would be cool, some kind of 3.5 replacement usb port or something... so useful. cheers for the quick answer gab
GLX
Get a flight case with a small "dog house" at the back Plenty of room for the PSU and getting disks in and out.
samcoombes
Is there any way I can do this? I want to swap the floppy drive for a USB one.... surely someone has bodged one in!
Frog Genius
i am happy with it as it is, my school would have to buy usb memory sticks if you did!
ice
Because magically your console would have a USB port all of the sudden? I think you'll have to buy it if it's ever going to be made, and what I get from K-Nine's response it'll probably be an option in new consoles, not the ones already out there. DANET
it would be a good idea to put a usb socket as the word is gradualy getting itno a more futre state and floppy drives on computers are not there any more!!
Jude
As floppy disks seem to be being replaced, it would be useful to have a USB port so that people with phantom frog on their laptops can save a show onto a pen drive (or something like it) and load it to the desk. Just a suggestion. Thanks
bfarrar
Sign me up since I just had to replace the Floppy Drive on my less than year old Fat Frog. I do not like nor do I trust Floppy Disks. Brad
59099
It would be even beter as an retrofit. We just ordered a new FatFrog and we don't have any floppy disk's here anymore (on the aproxximatly 600 computers in the building (well maybe the servers have)). So we are getting a USB floppy drive for the audio/lighting booth computer, but it's far from ideal.
ice
No flame intended, but damn... you people should understand it's nearly impossible to fit hardware onto a platform which isn't intended to support that kind of device. Sure, with USB this all became a lot easier because you can hookup every kind of device with a USB port on it. But the chip which makes this possible has to be put into the hardware design when that's being made. It's like trying to fit 6 seats into a normal hatchback chassis: can't be done (easily). If you really need USB: buy another desk. If you don't have the money for that, accept the floppydrive for now. </annoyed-IT-guy-mode> Quote > 500 posts, time for a new T-shirt? 59099
If we truly NEEDED it, we indeed wouldn't have ordered the FatFrog, but that doesn't mean, we would like it. (But hey, I would also like other stuff which I am not getting... Never hurts to ask around though does it ? )
ice
No it doens't, at least not the first 5 times this question came up. I asked about it myself too, way back... search, find and conclude it's not gonna happen and then focus on doable requests, like software stuff. Quote > 500 posts, time for a new T-shirt? Paul
I promise you we won't design any new desks with floppy disks in! As to producing a retrofittable kit for existing Frogs, this depends on a number of things including technical feasibility, costs, available R&D time, and the level of demand there might be for such a kit. So yes we are interested in gauging the level of demand, but we're not going to make any commitments at the moment I'm afraid.
ice
So maybe somekind of poll will help? Quote > 500 posts, time for a new T-shirt?
Bob Sorich
I deal with a lot of schools which own a frog desk. Many use out of date software. Very difficult to get them to upgrade as most computrs in schools don't have floppy drives anymore so I can't just e-mail them the software. A retrofit USB port would certainly help with this situation. If there is a poll on this question then COUNT ME IN!!! Bob:)
Paul
I've added a poll to this topic, so cast your votes please...
Transalp
Hello Paul, at the poll you posted the cost in £ but what is it in €?
Kirkup_xp
Approximate equivalents: Yes, at any cost Yes, if it costs less than €300 Yes, if it costs less than €150 Yes, if it costs less than €75 No, not at all Quote Peter Kirkup
simploerob
would the board support a cd rw drive? as even if the board would not support usb, you could use a cd rw? i can see people liking the idea of a usb. ( like i do!) but just thought i would ask as i could not see the question any where. simon
Paul
There aren't any interfaces on the main processor PCB for a CD drive of any kind I'm afraid.
