    Intensity effects

    That's great, you're finally moving over to the Carallon library? Unfortunately I don't think that's really going to help with the effects engine though, because it's just so overly complicated to use and nothing is particularly clear. Just getting a simple zoom effect to run is a nightmare, from tight to wide, and then getting an offset going. I find getting the speed and size to work is so hard. Then if you want something random... I'm also not a fan of working within the menus for the effects, it's too easy to click the wrong thing or exit the menu and lose what you'd been working on. Also, it's hard to know what you will actually get by changing things, it's more a case of trial and error and hoping you eventually get lucky with something that is at least similar to what you were trying to achieve. In my experience the ETC Eos is a pretty poor desk to busk on, but at least I can work confidently with the effects and get EXACTLY what I want on almost my first attempt with just some minor tuning sometimes needed. Being able to put my palettes in the effects makes a huge difference, I feel in ZerOS I'm very restricted. That may be partly because I'm not sure how the effects engine actually works, but that is then a failure on the software not being clear and the manual not really explaining it properly. How for instance would I create an effect that uses my colour palettes? And I'm not talking about creating chases that's not the same thing.

    Cross fade chase

    I'd just like to add, having had this desk since its launch, this is still the one thing that catches me out and I keep forgetting! It just doesn't seem logical to me, and I'll probably still be coming back to the forum next year to remind myself how I do this! :-)

    Cross fade chase

    So this seems like a fairly basic question, but I can't figure it out... How do I make a chase that cross fades between colours? I have my generic 5 colour wash in Red, Green, Blue, Amber, Pink using parcans. So the steps I follow are: Red @@ {RECORD} to playback 1 Red @ {ENTER} Blue @@ {RECORD} to playback 1 Create a chase Blue @ {ENTER} Green @@ {RECORD} to playback 1 Green @ {ENTER} etc..... Now I have a basic 5 step chase that snaps from Red to Blue to Green to Amber to Pink and back to Red. I can speed it up and slow it down, but that just leaves the Red on for longer, SNAP Blue............. SNAP Green............ SNAP Amber. If I speed it up I get SNAP Red.. SNAP Blue.. SNAP Green etc... I can change the attributed of the chase to Ramp Up which fades up Red, SNAP out, fade up Blue SNAP out etc... or I can ramp down which is SNAP Red, fade out, SNAP Blue, fade out. How can I ramp up AND down? Is there a way to overlap the cross fade so it fades up red, and then fades up Blue as it fades down Red so I don't have a dip to black between each step?

    Recording individual parameters in palettes

    Thanks Jon, I knew about the tagging feature and thought I'd untagged all the other parameters. I probably just made a mistake, I'll have to go back and try again!
  5. How do I record a specific parameter in a palette? I'm using my moving head profile, it has gobos, prism, focus, rotation etc... all on the "Beam" control. How do I set up a palette so that it just records the prism in, and another with the prism out? Same with rotation, say I hit a rotate clockwise palette and it just rotates the currents selected gobo? At the moment, when I record a beam palette it seems to record every beam attribute. I'm certain I'm just doing something wrong.

    Manual fade times

    Is there a way to set manual fade times? For instance, when I'm busking a show with moving lights and I go from one position pallet to another, they always transition as a snap. but I'd like to have them move over say 2 or 3 seconds so it's not as jarring. Same with the colour attribute, instead of snapping to a colour pallet, I'd like it to fade. I just want my changes to be more subtle during a gig... I could turn the intensity off before making the changes, but it's quite nice to be able to move the lights to different positions during a song sometimes. What would be really nice is the ability to set a fade time that is stored in the pallet, so I could set up the same positions but with different times associated with them. Say a snap (0s), fast(2s), medium5(s), slow (8s). But as a bare minimum I'd like to have a default "manual" fade time option in the "Defaults" setup page. Maybe this is already a feature? But if it is I can't find it.

    Ah, thanks. I think I got that working! Shame it needs to use up a valuable MFF, but it's better than nothing and probably better than a fixed time in the setup options.

    Auto Palette confirmation

    Can you add a confirmation box when hitting the "Automatically Create xxx palettes", it's really annoying if you've named the gobo palettes and then accidentally touch the "auto generate" button and all your work is gone in an instant! Easier to do than you might imagine when using a touch-screen and scrolling etc...

    Thanks for the quick reply ziglight, I only have PhantomZerOS at home and I don't know how to press multiple buttons on that with a mouse I can try it at work on Monday on the desk, but can you tell me what pressing TIME while changing pallets actually does? Haaaang on.... There isn't a TIME button on the FLX..... Are you winding me up?

    Fixture editor: Auto create palettes

    Out of interest Jon, what's the Zero 88 companies dictionary definition of "soon"? It gets used a LOT, like the Shape feature will be implemented "soon", the fixture library will be changed "soon", a user manual will be coming "soon"... Lot's of stuff has been coming "soon" for a least two years now. I spoke to you at ABTT last year and it was coming "really soon", well now it's almost ABTT again, and we're still waiting....

    Understanding Effect Waveforms

    I'm struggling to get to grips with the Effect Waveforms with my RGB fixtures. I've been trying to make a smooth fade across the RGB spectrum, so starting at Red fading through to Yellow into Green to Cyan then into Blue and finally Magenta before fading back to Red and moving evenly across all the colours in between. I don't want it to stop at any point in the cycle and I don't want it to dip to black... just a consistent colour fade that goes round and round. How do I achieve this with the Effect Waveform generator? If I set Red, Green and Blue to Sine then they all follow the same path so I get fade to White, then out etc... Logically I think I need to offset the Sine wave, but the options are Sine, Sine 180, Sine 270. This doesn't seem to make sense since if I offset Green by 180 it's doing the opposite curve to Red, if I set then set Blue to Sine 270 they are all out of sync so it never does the cycle I'm looking for. It feels like I need to set the Sine to 120 for Green and 240 for Blue but those aren't options.... Is my understanding of how this works wrong? I feel like I need a tutorial on how this feature is implemented. Most colour fixtures are either RGB or CMY with an increasing number of RGBA/RGBW etc... So I don't understand why the 120/240 offsets for the Function don't exist. The Step function is the same, it's 0/90/180/270... again divided into 4. So how does this work with fixtures that use three colour attributes?

    Chases on faders

    When I add an effect to a fader using the built in Rainbow effect on some RGB LEDs the default behaviour seems to be to fade it in over 3 seconds and then snap out when the fader is back at zero. How do I change this so the fader controls the intensity of the effect?

    FLX "presets"

    Does the FLX have what I would call a "preset" or equivalent? I know that you can use palettes to store colour, beam, intensity etc... But if I wanted to store a complete look into a pallet to recall as and when I need it, what would be the method to achieve this? Say I want my movers focussed on certain position, colour, size and gobo... how can I store all those attributes for recall and referencing? On other desks I'd make a "preset" that would store a certain look. Do I have no choice other than to reference all the individual attribute pallets each time?

    FLX "presets"

    Thanks, it's good to know it's possible but a separate "looks" function would seem more logical. Presumably doing it using the current method would use up a Colour pallet (or whatever you choose) but also store beam / intensity or whatever else you selected. Could get messy and confusing if you have lots of pallets and you use recall a "colour" pallet and suddenly find out it's moved the position too...

    Some requests and a bug

    I just plotted a show on the FLX, it's the first time I've really used it for that purpose. Up to now it's been used as a busking desk... However this was for a theatrical production and I had a couple of issues with with things the Lighting Designer wanted that I didn't know how to achieve. Firstly default times... you can set a default fade time, but that default is for up and down. But the LD wanted me to set default fade times of 3 up and 5 down. Can we have the ability to set default times for each parameter in a future update? At the moment the Copy button will only copy cues and playbacks I think? Can you also enable a way to copy channel data? For instance, I get a look I like for a moving light with colour, gobo, focus, position etc.. I want to copy that to another moving light in the rig. I don't think that's currently possible is it? Or if I find a colour in one of my LED fixtures I really like, I want to say "Group 31 Copy 141" which will make all fixtures in Group 31 the same as channel 141. On the whole, plotting the show was a fairly pain free process, coming from an ETC Ion there are obviously limitations. Having to put effects into other playbacks and using Macros in my cue stack felt a bit clunky for instance... A couple of time I used the "goto cue" function by holding the Go button and typing a cue number. Although it went to that cue, on a few occasions it didn't update the cue list to show me the current position which was a bit awkward and I don't know why.

    Possible bug?

    When setting up the Remote options in Setup, when I enter the "Password" field I don't get a keyboard pop up to let me enter anything. So I'm either stuck witht he default password, or just numbers... This doesn't seem right to me.

    More questions / issues

    Hi Jon, I've spent a bit longer with the desk now using the beta build you sent me. Had a couple of incidents where the desk appeared to crash, but after a minute or two of being totally unresponsive all the commands fired at once as it caught up. That wasn't much fun! I've had the FLX hooked up to Capture, but it seems a bit hit and miss with getting the thing to connect. But then I'm not sure if that's an FLX issue or a network configuration thing, I seem to just turn everything off and on a lot until eventually it connects. As a preface, I'm generally very impressed with the desk so far with a few caveats. It certainly feels like it's been released too soon and not ready for a consumer release which is a shame. At the same time, I can see lot of potential for this console as the firmware gets developed over the coming months. Here are my problems: - How can I put a chase into a cue stack? I can put an effect into a cue and that works as I'd expect, but if I want to create a parcan chase and put that in a cue, how do I do that? At the moment, you can either have a cue stack OR a chase. It doesn't appear to be possible to have a chase IN a cue stack. - When plotting in tracking, is it possible to re-record a cue in "cue only" so any changes I've made don't track forwards? For example, I have 5 cues in my stack, I go back to cue 2 and put channel 6 @ 50%. When I re-record cue 2, channel 6 will track forwards. Now I have to go to cue 3 to take it back out and then re-record that cue as well. What I'd like to do is have a way to record channel 6 @ 50% ONLY in cue 2. Sometimes I want my changes to track forwards, so the default record behaviour is fine, other time I only want my changes to happen in the cue I've changed. This becomes more of a problem when changing multiple channels/intensities as it means a lot of work to go to the next cue and undo them all again! - Is there a block command for cues? Another question about tracking, I am in the habit of manually making all my blackouts and other key cues "block" cues. This means if I go back and make any changes before the block cue, those changes don't track into, or beyond the point of the block. - Why does the MFF reset the cue stack? This is an issue rather than a question for me. If I bring the intensity fader down on the cue stack, it resets it back to the start. I really don't expect that behaviour. In my mind, that is a master intensity for the playback and shouldn't change the position in the stack. When I bring the fader back up, I should be in the same cue, not back at cue 1! I just don't like it and it seems like a dangerous behaviour that could cause big problems for an operator during a show! - How can I change all timings of a cue? With default fade times set to say 3s, if I want a snap it seems I currently have to go to every fade time and set them all to 0 one at a time. Is there a way to set ALL time to 0 for a cue? It's currently a dull and time consuming process to have to change each attributes time individually. - How do I copy a cue? So I'm using my master playback, I've created 5 cues and now I want to use cue 2 in cue 6. How do I copy it? - Can you set "Auto-follow" to start after the trigger? Okay, so I have a cue (4) that has a fade time of 10s and an auto follow of 3s. Currently it waits until the cue is complete (10s) and then hangs for the wait time (3s). So cue 5 will trigger after 13s, in some cases that's fine and exactly what you want. But, equally I'd like cue 5 to trigger after 3s, not 13s. In this instance cue 4 will still fade over the original 10s, but cue 5 will trigger 3s after hitting GO on cue 4. - How do I edit channel values in a cue? There's no "Load" button to bring the current cue into the programmer. So, if I'm in cue 5 and I want to change the value of channel 12 from 80% to 70%. Instinctively I type "12 At 70 Enter", but this doesn't work as when I hit "Enter" it edits the cue number, or whatever field is currently highlighted. So how do I change the values of recorded channels? Thanks for the help!

    Slight niggle editing times etc..

    Hi Jon, Created a few separate threads with these questions, figured it would make them easier to find for other people. It was good to catch up with you at ABTT on Wednesday by the way! I've found something that has started to annoy me, not in a big way, just in "why does it do that" kind of way. When I move the cursor over a fade time or other cue attribute, why do I have to hit "Enter" before I can edit that field? It feels natural to highlight it, and the act of starting to type should automatically start editing that field. At the moment the work flow is: 1 - Move cursor 2 - Highlight field 3 - Hit Enter 4 - Type time 5 - Hit Enter I'd love to be able to remove step 3, it seems unnecessary and I forget to do it all the time which makes me frustrated after the 10th or 11th time! Oh... and don't forget what we discussed about finding some way to highlight that a cue is a snapshot! It's really important when using track forward/back to know exactly how far your changes will track. At the moment, you have to just remember which cues are blocks. Regards.

    Where is it in the product line?

    Where does the FLX sit in your product line? Is it designed to replace the Solution? Does it sit between the Solution and Orb XF? Or is it between a Jester and Solution? Looking at it, I'd say it's somewhere between the Solution and the Orb. It just confuses me that on your product page you have it listed below the Solution. We currently have a Frog 48 which needs replacing, we were going to just buy a new Solution. But the announcment of the FLX makes me think that might be a better option. But is there anything the Solution does that the FLX doesn't?

    Highlight

    Hi, In am earlier post I asked how you can easily channel check. You said to use the "highlight" function on a UDK and then use the arrows for next and last fixture. This used to work fine, but I've just tried it now and the arrow keys don't do anything. For example, type "41 Highlight", channel 41 comes on. Now use the arrow key to go to 42, but it doesn't do anything. How do I use this feature now? So helpful when channel checking or focusing a rig. Really want this functionality back... Or if it's been changed to know how it's done now. Regards

    Manually tagging/untagging parameters

    So how DO you untag a parameter now? Trying to record my RGB LEDs colours onto playbacks for manual mixing, but it's recording all colours to each playback so you can't mix them. Before, I'd only tag the individual colour for each playback by untagging the other two. Can't see any way to make that happen now.
